Riley's Parasite Arc
activeA slow erosion. The body turns against itself, and no one knows yet.
Status
Seeded. Not yet active. Early signals have been planted in existing scenes. The arc has not been surfaced to any character’s full awareness. The pieces are in place.
What Happened
Riley contracted a parasite during an encounter on Darkstar’s ship. The exact circumstances of the encounter are not fully documented. The parasite was not an accident — it was introduced deliberately, with a specific biological target.
The Parasite
Target: Riley’s spider gene specifically. The parasite has bonded to the spider-derived genetics, not to Riley as a baseline human. This makes it both harder to detect through standard medical screening (it reads, partially, as the biology it’s attached to) and more specific in its effects.
Goal: The working theory is that the parasite’s intended outcome is stripping Riley’s moral restraint rather than killing him. Something in the spider gene’s expression is connected to how Riley processes ethical constraints — his caution, his guilt-driven boundaries, the thing that makes him stop. The parasite is working against that.
This is not fast. The deterioration is gradual and reads, so far, as ordinary aging and accumulated physical wear. Riley is already hiding physical decline. The parasite is indistinguishable from that decline at this stage.
Planted Signals (Existing Scenes)
| Signal | Scene | Nature |
|---|---|---|
| Incomplete healing | Danger room training | Injuries taking longer than they should. Riley clocks it; dismisses it. |
| Lethargy | Implied across several scenes | Not dramatic; just a little slower, a little heavier than he should be |
| Zara’s sense of danger | Ongoing (passive) | Zara’s genetic entanglement means she passively receives his distress signal. It’s getting louder. She doesn’t know why. |
Darkstar’s Role
Darkstar introduced the parasite. Current framing: Darkstar is a passive observer taking notes — not an active antagonist in the current arc. The parasite’s progress is an ongoing data collection event for Darkstar.
Open question: Is Darkstar actively monitoring the experiment’s progress, or will they discover its success retroactively? This determines whether Darkstar has ongoing intelligence about Riley’s state that no one else has.
Zara Thorne / Filament — Connection
Zara’s powers are genetically entangled with Riley’s spider gene. Because the parasite is targeting that gene specifically, the distress signal she passively receives is intensifying. She is not symptomatic — she has not contracted the parasite and there is no current evidence the entanglement creates a transmission vector.
However: the possibility that Zara could become a secondary host risk exists and is flagged as a future arc beat. It is not a current threat.
What is current: Zara knows something is wrong with Riley. The signal is getting too loud to dismiss. She doesn’t know what she’s receiving or why it’s getting worse.
Who Knows What
| Character | Status |
|---|---|
| Riley | Knows he’s declining. Attributes it to age and wear. Has not connected it to anything external. |
| Zara | Knows something is wrong. Does not know about the parasite. Increasingly unable to dismiss the signal. |
| A.E.G.I.S. Medical | Does not know about the parasite. Would want to know about the general decline; Riley is actively hiding it from them. |
| Darkstar | Introduced the parasite. Degree of ongoing monitoring: open question. |
| Everyone else | Unaware. |
Open Questions
- Is Darkstar actively monitoring the parasite’s progression, or will they discover Riley’s altered state retroactively?
- At what point does Zara’s distress signal become impossible to ignore — what pushes her to act?
- How does the parasite’s goal (stripping moral restraint) manifest behaviorally? What changes in Riley, and when does someone else notice it before he does?
- What is the treatment? Is there one? Does treating it require exposing Riley’s condition to A.E.G.I.S.?
- If the parasite reaches its goal, what does Riley without moral restraint actually do?
- Does the secondary host risk to Zara activate if she makes physical contact with Riley during advanced parasite stages?
