The Nolan Cut — Session 3
activeThe Nolan Cut — Session 3
This is the director’s pass. Every beat earns its place. Nothing is included because it was planned — only because it advances the thematic question or forces a choice no one is ready for.
Thematic question for this session: What do you do with power you didn’t earn — and what does it cost to refuse it?
Where We’re Coming From
Two sessions have established:
- Signal is winning. Three reveals spent, one more than planned. The Alliance is in disarray. The team’s legitimacy is cratering.
- The players chose violence. They destroyed the Eclipse lab instead of infiltrating it. They rejected Nightfall’s pairing. They hit back. Now Eclipse knows they’re coming.
- Multiple clocks are running simultaneously. Vane’s gala is tomorrow. Jason’s Wavelength energy is unanchored. Sterling is carrying the fake-corpse secret. Riley is slowly dying. The alliance is fraying.
- Nothing is resolved. Every beat that was “completed” created new problems. Nothing was neatly closed.
This is the session where the weight lands.
Beat Architecture
The session has four movements, each tighter than the last:
| Movement | Name | Beats | Emotional Register |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | Breathing Room | 1–2 | The last quiet. Characters process. Seeds get pulled. |
| II | The Counterpunch | 3–4 | Eclipse retaliates. Signal drops Reveal 3 and 4. The ground shifts. |
| III | The Gala | 5–7 | Vane’s benefit. The confrontation. Evidence and exposure collide. |
| IV | Aftermath | 8 | The world is different now. The team decides who they are without the structure they lost. |
Intersecting Clocks
These are all running simultaneously. The session is the point where they start to collide:
- ⏰ Vane’s Gala — tomorrow night. Ticking.
- ⏰ Jason’s Wavelength energy — unanchored. Countdown continues. May have accelerated.
- ⏰ Eclipse retaliation — accelerated by lab destruction. Arrives harder and sooner.
- ⏰ Sterling’s secret — he knows the corpse is fake. What does he do with it?
- ⏰ Riley’s parasite — hidden, progressing. Zara’s signal is getting louder.
- ⏰ Signal’s remaining reveals — Paragon Force and Half-Life/Decay. Held for maximum damage.
- ⏰ Raze — knows Sterling’s identity is public. Revenge plot. Location unknown.
GM Principles for This Session
- Don’t rescue the characters from consequences. They hit an Eclipse lab. Eclipse is coming for them. Let it land.
- Every scene is a choice. No scene exists just to deliver information. If it doesn’t force a decision, cut it.
- Signal is not in the room. He places things and leaves. His absence is its own comment.
- The city is watching. After two broadcasts, there’s no private failure anymore. Every fight is a public argument about whether heroes should exist.
- Go deeper, not wider. When a threat escalates, make the local consequences worse before expanding the scope.
- The NPCs have their own clocks. Sloane, Adrian, Lila — they are making moves off-screen. The team doesn’t control the timeline.
- Let the players be wrong. If they made a destructive choice last session, own it. No retcon. No soft landing.
