The Paragon and Renegade Forces

Two cosmic principles. One balancing, one opposing. The engine under a hundred years of Halden City history.

The Paragon Force

A cosmic intelligence that grants a single host immense power. Quantum’s working theory: the Paragon Force is a balancing principle — heroism embedded into the fabric of the universe itself.

Rules:

  • Bonds to a single host at a time
  • Only transfers upon the death of its previous host
  • The Force’s equal and opposite — the Renegade Force — is matched against it in combat; most Paragon hosts fall to the Renegade wielder
  • Death in that clash is the historical pattern, not the exception

Known Hosts:

HostEraNotes
UnknownWWII era”Asset CROWN.” Classified existence. Died 1999.
Ethan Roberts2005–presentReluctant, methodical, acutely aware of his predecessor’s failures. Has known how to end the Paragon cycle and chosen not to act (Virek cache revelation).

Powers granted: Flight, super strength, super speed, heat vision, x-ray vision, extreme durability.

The Renegade Force

The equal and opposite principle. Where the Paragon Force embeds heroism, the Renegade Force embeds defiance — challenge, opposition, the pressure that tests whether heroism is real.

Rules:

  • Also bonds to a single host
  • Unlike the Paragon Force, the Renegade Force can be voluntarily relinquished (confirmed: Signal did this)
  • When relinquished voluntarily, the host retains no residual abilities

Known Hosts:

HostEraNotes
Soviet-adjacent operative1947First documented manifestation. Vanished. File open for decades.
Dr. Gabriel Virek / Nemesis~1982–1999Began “hearing a frequency” while compiling the Virek Papers. Assembled classified evidence of Paragon’s interventions. Died in the 1999 West Coast Broadcast.
Signal[Undisclosed era]Was briefly a Renegade host, operating underground. Voluntarily relinquished as part of his ideological plan — holding a cosmic power while building a movement against super-dependence would undermine his own message. Now an ordinary human. No residual powers.
Carter WilliamsCurrentParalyzed by Avi’s power manifesting at a high school party. The Force healed him on bonding. He understands his selection as cosmic confirmation of his grievance. Signal is using that.

Ending the Cycle

The Virek Papers contain a revelation: Ethan Roberts has known how to end the Paragon cycle and has chosen not to act.

What it means: If the Paragon and Renegade Forces are simultaneously rejected by human hosts — both relinquished at the same moment — the cosmic mechanism reads it as humanity declaring itself capable of self-determination. The Forces withdraw. No new hosts are chosen. Earth is no longer a planet with a Paragon.

Why Ethan hasn’t done it: The choice requires a willing Renegade host to relinquish at the same moment. Ethan cannot act unilaterally — and every Renegade host he has encountered has either died in conflict or, in Signal’s case, relinquished the Force for their own reasons and vanished before Ethan could reach them. There may also be something the Force itself does, quietly, to complicate the clarity of the moment.

What it costs: Ending the cycle means no more Paragon. It means humanity faces whatever comes next without the balancing principle Quantum believes is embedded in the universe’s fabric. Ethan has not been willing to make that bet on behalf of everyone else.

The unresolved question: Whether his hesitation is principled caution or the Force protecting itself through him.

The Cosmic Balance

Quantum theorizes these are not random phenomena but embedded principles — the universe’s mechanism for ensuring heroism is tested rather than unchallenged. The Paragon Force finds someone worthy of carrying the ideal. The Renegade Force finds someone capable of breaking it, or proving it real.

Most hosts never know the full scope of what they’re carrying.

The Virek Papers Connection

Dr. Gabriel Virek spent decades compiling evidence of Paragon’s extralegal interventions — election interference, covert operations, abuse of the mandate. The partially revealed Papers suggest Ethan Roberts (the current Paragon) has known how to end the Paragon cycle and has chosen not to act. This information is classified and withheld from the Alliance.

Open Questions

  • What happened to the Renegade Force after Signal relinquished it — how did it find Carter Williams specifically?
  • Is there a pattern to who the Forces choose, beyond grievance and capacity for belief?
  • Does the Force influence its host’s cognition, or only their capability?
  • If Ethan disclosed the end-cycle mechanism to the Alliance, would any of them support it?
