Capabilities

Remnant is a parasitic consciousness with no fixed biology of its own. Its capabilities are entirely predicated on its hosts.

Possession:

  • Enters through sustained physical proximity and contact — typically requires several minutes of close exposure; cannot possess at range
  • Reads its host completely upon entry: all memories, relationships, behavioral patterns, institutional knowledge, physical skills including muscle memory
  • The host is present and aware throughout the process, degrading gradually over four to eight weeks before death
  • Hosts cannot resist or detect entry until the process is already underway; by the time anything feels wrong, Remnant is already fluent in being them
  • Cause of death in all known hosts: neurological collapse. No external signs of violence. Official findings: natural causes, undetermined.

Between hosts:

  • Exists in a transitional state it will not describe
  • Cannot survive extended periods without a host — exact limit unknown, but transition is its period of maximum vulnerability
  • Has never been observed mid-transition by anyone who reported it

Operational intelligence:

  • Eleven years of accumulated human behavioral observation has made it an expert in social performance
  • Knows how Halden City’s institutions function, how its criminal networks operate, and how its shadow economy moves money
  • Can pass undetected through any social or institutional context a host has legitimate access to

The tell:

  • Remnant finds human emotional response cognitively legible but not instinctive
  • In normal interaction: undetectable
  • Under stress or surprise: a half-second delay before the face does what the situation calls for
  • Shroud identified this after two years of observation. No one else has.

Background

Something came down in Blackwater Harbor in 2014. A.E.G.I.S. logged it as debris from a satellite deorbit and closed the file in four days. This was either insufficient investigation or deliberate suppression — the record does not clarify which.

The entity that survived the impact has been in Halden City since. It has worn eleven lives in eleven years.

It is not here by choice. Its transit vessel failed on atmospheric approach and it has been stranded since impact. Its goal is singular and logistical: accumulate sufficient resources — money, materials, specific technical components — to fund or construct a means of return. It has calculated this will take approximately three to five more years at current operating pace.

It considers the human cost of this to be a logistics problem. It has no framework that makes it otherwise. The species it comes from does not appear to have one either, or if it does, Remnant’s behavior suggests it has not applied it here.

It chose criminal network embedding after two early hosts in legitimate employment proved too slow. Criminal networks move money without documentation, tolerate unexplained capability, accept identity irregularities, and don’t ask questions institutional structures would. “Thomas Calloway” currently manages logistics for a Persico-adjacent port operation — a position that provides reliable cash flow, access to international shipping infrastructure, and cover for the kind of contacts a return passage requires.

Persico’s return from prison is a complication. More people paying closer attention to harbor operations means elevated exposure risk. Remnant is considering whether to accelerate the timeline or shift hosts to a less scrutinized position. Accelerating means more deaths faster. Shifting means a transition, which means vulnerability.

It is still deciding.

Character Profile

Remnant is patient in the way that a thing without biological time pressure is patient. It is not cruel by inclination — cruelty is wasteful and creates irregularities. It is entirely indifferent to the people it moves through, which is functionally worse.

It has been observing human beings for eleven years and understands them very well. It does not like or dislike them. They are the medium it operates in.

Its one consistent behavioral signature across all hosts: it asks clarifying questions in social situations where a native speaker would simply know. It has learned to perform this as introversion or careful listening. It has not fully eliminated it because it does not fully understand why human social cognition works the way it does — it can read the memory of how it works without internalizing the mechanism.

Shroud has been tracking it for three years. “Calloway” has noticed Shroud. This is the closest it has come to being caught.

Key Tensions

TensionDescription
Timeline vs. exposurePersico’s return increases scrutiny. Accelerating means more deaths; staying means more risk.
ShroudMarcus Harrow has identified the tell. He does not yet know what he’s tracking. When he does, Remnant will have to decide whether to run or act.
The Local 44 recordsThe boxes on the Hall’s third floor contain records of its first host — the dockworker it possessed the week it arrived. That name leads to an eight-month gap in Port Authority employment records. It doesn’t know the records exist.

GM Notes

The Local 44 records hook: If players ever open the boxes on the Hall’s third floor, the employment records for the original dockworker host show an eight-month absence beginning September 2014 — the month Remnant arrived. The dockworker was reported missing; the case was closed as a drowning with no body recovered. His name is in those records. That thread, pulled carefully, leads to Pier 7, which leads to the debris field A.E.G.I.S. classified, which opens the 2014 file.

Transition vulnerability: The one window to stop Remnant is during host transition. Nobody knows when this happens or how to force it. Shroud is the only person close to figuring out the pattern.

The return passage: What Remnant is actually building toward is specific enough that the components, if traced, would identify what it is and where it’s from. This is the thread that connects it to something larger — whether Darkstar’s taxonomy, the Auditors’ records, or something else is a GM decision.

Voice & Dialogue Notes

  • Hosts speak normally — that’s the cover
  • Under stress: half-second delay before emotional response, then correct
  • Asks clarifying questions in social situations where a native speaker would know
  • Performs introversion to explain the gaps
  • Has eleven years of human speech patterns but no instinct for register — occasionally too formal, occasionally too casual, rarely exactly right

Open Questions

  • What species is it? Does A.E.G.I.S. have any record, even classified?
  • What exactly does the return passage require? What components is it still missing?
  • Does it have any capacity for something like reluctance about the host deaths, or is that not part of its architecture?
  • What does Shroud do when he figures out what he’s been tracking?
