Powers

Spider-gene entanglement. Zara’s powers are genetically entangled with Riley Thomas’s spider-derived abilities — a biological anomaly, not a coincidence. The exact mechanism is undocumented and neither of them fully understands it.

Active capabilities (retired from use):

  • Filament generation — producing and manipulating near-invisible high-tensile strands from her fingertips. Precision work: snares, trip lines, structural reinforcement, and at full extension, area denial.
  • Enhanced agility (lower magnitude than Riley’s)
  • Heightened tactile sensitivity

Passive, ongoing:

  • Distress signal reception — because of the genetic entanglement with Riley’s spider gene, Zara passively receives a low-level somatic signal when Riley experiences significant physical harm or strain. She does not experience his pain; she experiences something more like an unlocatable sense of wrongness, a pull in the direction of someone she’s not supposed to be worrying about. She cannot turn this off. She has learned to mostly ignore it. She is finding it harder to ignore lately.

Note: The entanglement is one-directional as currently understood — Zara receives signal from Riley; there is no confirmed evidence Riley receives anything from her. Whether the channel could run both directions under different conditions is an open question.

Background

Zara and Riley’s histories are entangled in ways that precede either of them understanding it. They manifested related abilities in the same city, in the same year, apparently independently. Both were operating unsanctioned in overlapping territory before either knew the other existed. The first time they crossed paths it was a territorial dispute; by the third time it was something else.

She retired from active heroism at some point before the Alliance was formally established. The retirement was a decision, not a defeat. She built the dance studio, kept the life she wanted, and maintained just enough involvement in the Recluse network to stay connected without being drawn back in.

That equilibrium is currently under pressure.

Recruitment role: Zara assists in identifying and approaching prospective contacts for the Recluse network. She has a talent for reading people, patience Riley lacks, and credibility in Riverside Ward that doesn’t come attached to a mask. She does this on her own terms and at her own pace. Riley doesn’t argue with the terms.

Character Profile

Zara is someone who made a deliberate choice and is committed to it — but the choice was never about not caring. She cares. She just decided she couldn’t do this forever and chose what came after while she still had the clarity to choose well.

The thing that’s happening with Riley’s health is eroding that clarity.

There is unresolved tension between her and Riley. Not hostility. The kind of tension that comes from two people who know each other too well and have never fully decided what to do about that. The dance studio is real and she loves it; her life outside the network is real. She is not waiting for Riley to come back around. She is also not entirely not waiting.

Relationships

PersonRelationship
Riley Thomas / RecluseComplicated. Former partner (operational and possibly otherwise). Genetic entanglement means she is involuntarily aware of his physical state. Current dynamic: wary concern she is doing her best to manage. Intense attraction and tension, unresolved.
Recluse networkAssists on her terms. Knows more of Riley’s people than they know about her.

The Parasite Arc Connection

Current status: Zara contracted no parasite. She is not a host and is not symptomatic.

The passive distress signal she receives from Riley is intensifying as the parasite progresses. What was formerly a background hum is becoming something harder to dismiss. She doesn’t know about the parasite. What she knows is that something is wrong with Riley, that it’s getting worse, and that he is not telling anyone.

She will play a more active role as the parasite arc develops. Whether she becomes a secondary host risk is a future arc beat, not a current one.

Open Questions

  • What exactly is the mechanism of the genetic entanglement? Is it documented in any A.E.G.I.S. file?
  • What is the full history of Zara and Riley’s operational partnership — how long, what ended it?
  • Does Zara know about the parasite, or only that something is wrong?
  • Could the distress signal channel run in both directions under the right conditions?
  • What would it take for her to come out of retirement?
