Who She Is

Lily Matthews is fifteen years old and she knows her sister’s secret. Mary told her. She kept it. She was proud of it, in the way younger siblings are proud of things they’re not supposed to know.

What she doesn’t have is an ending. Nobody gave her one. She just knows her sister stopped coming home.

She recognized Jason from Signal’s broadcast and has been looking for him since. She doesn’t want answers about what happened — not exactly. She wants something true about Mary that she doesn’t already have.

The Scene

A coffee shop somewhere near Halden University, between Beat 3 and Beat 5. Jason is out of costume. Lily approaches him — or he clocks her first across the room, sitting alone, working up the nerve, and has to decide whether to stay.

She doesn’t lead with grief. She leads with recognition. Then she sits down because she doesn’t know what else to do with herself.

The question she eventually asks is something close to:

“What was she like? When it was just the two of you? She always seemed so much happier with you.”

She doesn’t know that’s a knife. She just misses her sister.

What She Knows

  • Mary’s powers — light and shadow manipulation, the partnership with Jason, the work they did together
  • That Jason was there when Mary died, or close enough to it
  • Nothing about Nightfall, nothing about what actually happened, nothing about why

What She Doesn’t Know

  • The specifics of Mary’s death
  • That Jason absorbed Mary’s power at the moment of her death
  • That Jason is on the new team Signal just broadcast to the city
  • Anything about the dual-power instability or what it is costing him

GM Notes

  • Lily is not a plot device. She is a person who lost her sister. Play her that way.
  • Her knowledge of Mary’s secret is a thread worth returning to — she is the only person left who knew Mary before and after the powers. That is not nothing.
  • If Jason forms a genuine connection with her, that connection becomes a vulnerability. It also becomes a reason to stay in the fight past the mission.
  • Do not use her to deliver plot information unless it emerges naturally from the conversation.
  • The scene counts as nemesis progress for Jason’s doom track if his player engages genuinely with it — he didn’t find Nightfall, but he found something that makes finding them mean something different than it did before.
  • She is 15 and she is carrying a secret she cannot tell anyone. That is its own kind of pressure.

Relationships

PersonRelationship
Mary Matthews / ArtemisOlder sister. Deceased. The only context Lily has for all of this.
Jason James / ApolloStranger who knew her sister better than she did, in ways she’s only beginning to understand.

Open Questions

  • Does Lily know Jason’s hero name, or just his face from the broadcast?
  • Does she have any of Mary’s belongings — a journal, notes, anything — that could become relevant later?
  • Who is she living with now — parents, another family member?
  • Does she know Nightfall’s name, or anything about what Mary was doing the night she died?
