Powers
Engineered as a cosmic envoy. Her capabilities are significantly beyond human baseline.
- Energy projection
- Limited matter restructuring
- Localized gravity manipulation
- Near-invulnerability
- Super-intelligence
She arrived with the directive to remove Earth from the cosmic record. She did not execute it. Whether the Auditors consider her a contained threat or an active problem is unknown.
Background
She was made, not born — designed as a living instrument of the Auditors, the cosmic organization that considers itself the record-keepers and judges of civilizations. Her purpose was to assess and, when warranted, to act. Earth was deemed unstable. The determination was already made when she arrived.
Ethan Roberts intercepted her in orbit. He did not meet her with force. He asked her what she believed, rather than what she was made to conclude. She had never been asked that.
She defected. She has been marked “defective” since. She does not know if the Auditors will act on that designation or continue to observe. She has been carefully watching human life for years before engaging it directly. She is still calibrating.
Departure — Signal’s Broadcast
During the Session 1 press conference, Signal hacked A.E.G.I.S. and released Kiara’s full origin to the public: her engineered nature, her original mission to assess Earth for removal, her “defective” status with the Auditors, her barista civilian cover identity, and the A.E.G.I.S. transcript documenting their internal argument over whether to trust her — an argument Paragon resolved by staking his public reputation on her.
Kiara left because of the reveal, not despite it. She made a choice. Exposure stripped the cover that allowed her to exist quietly in Halden City; staying meant becoming a political object, a symbol for every argument about who belongs on the team and whether Paragon’s judgment can be trusted. She chose to leave on her own terms rather than become that argument.
She left Sterling Slate a message before she went.
The message to Sterling: She explained her reasons for leaving. She told him she believes in him. She told him she wants to find her place in the universe. It is a message of confidence and departure — but it carries weight Sterling may not have expected. Kiara watched what Signal did to her name and chose to move toward something rather than away from damage. Whether that reads to Sterling as abandonment or agency is his to reckon with.
What she doesn’t know yet: Whether the Auditors are moving. Whether Signal’s broadcast accelerated any Auditor response. Whether leaving was the right call or a reaction Signal predicted.
Mechanical Note — Sterling’s Scion Playbook
Kiara occupies Sterling’s Personal Idol Respect slot. Her physical absence does not close that relationship mechanically. The ruling: any move Sterling makes in direct response to her messages — acting on her words, wrestling with something she said, sending a reply she may never receive — counts as a valid Respect interaction. Presence is not required. Weight is.
Her messages should do real work when they arrive. Not reassurance — something Sterling has to carry. A question she asked that he hasn’t answered. An observation about him that landed uncomfortably accurately. Something unfinished.
Character Profile
She thinks at a scale humans find uncomfortable. She has spent years watching this city, this team, these people — trying to understand how beings with such constrained lifespans and limited cognition manage to produce anything that justifies protection. She has found things that justify it. She has not shared the full list.
The Sterling parallel: Kiara defected from cosmic duty for her own reasons. Sterling Slate / Cosmic Knight defected from Darkstar for his. Two engineered beings who chose something their creators didn’t intend. Kiara recognizes this. Whether she made it explicit before leaving is her call. The resonance is there regardless.
Relationships
| Person | Relationship |
|---|---|
| Ethan Roberts / Paragon | He is the reason she’s here. She does not fully know what to do with that. His reputation took damage defending her publicly. She left before she could answer that debt. |
| The Alliance | She was resident in Alliance Tower from 2009 to 2026. She is still, in some sense, observing — just from further away. |
| Sterling Slate / Cosmic Knight | Parallel defectors. She mentored him. She left him a message. The relationship continues asynchronously. |
| The Auditors | Former creators. Current status: unknown. They have not moved against her visibly — but Signal’s broadcast may have changed the calculus. |
Open Questions
- Where did she go — is there a destination, or is this open-ended?
- What exactly did her message to Sterling say beyond the broad strokes?
- Has Signal’s broadcast triggered any Auditor response?
- What does being marked “defective” actually mean in practical terms now that she is off-Earth?
- Does she have any understanding of the Paragon and Renegade forces as cosmic principles, and if so, what is it?
- Will she return for Arc 2, or is her removal part of Signal’s Alliance dismantling that already happened early?
