Powers

The Paragon Force β€” cosmic intelligence bonded to him mid-air in 2005. Transfers only upon death of the host.

  • Flight
  • Super strength
  • Super speed
  • Heat vision
  • X-ray vision
  • Extreme durability

Matched in combat by the current Renegade Force host (Carter Williams). Most Paragon hosts fall to the Renegade. Ethan has been alive long enough to know what that statistic means.

Background

Air Force pilot, decorated, known for calm precision and loyalty to his wing. In 2005 he was scrambled during a residual energy crisis from the 1999 West Coast event. His jet was critically damaged. The dormant Paragon Force bonded to him mid-air. He survived a crash that should have killed him.

He watched the previous Paragon fall. He was 18 when it happened. He enlisted in the Air Force the year after.

He has never forgotten what kind of predecessor he inherited.

Character Profile

Reluctant and methodical. He is acutely aware of what the Paragon Force has historically done to the people around it β€” to cities, to governments, to the Renegade Force hosts who came to stop it. He has tried to hold the mantle differently than his predecessor. Whether he has succeeded is a question he does not ask out loud.

He believes in the Alliance as an institution. He believes in cooperation over unilateral action. He believes in asking questions before acting. These beliefs are not naivety β€” they are hard positions taken by someone who understands what happens when the person with the most power stops asking.

The secret: Ethan Roberts has known how to end the Paragon cycle and has chosen not to act. This information came from the Virek Papers cache. A.E.G.I.S. does not know he has seen it. The Alliance does not know. This choice β€” and the weight of not explaining it β€” is load-bearing in how he presents to everyone around him.

Relationships

PersonRelationship
Riley Thomas / RecluseHe sponsored Riley’s formal recognition. Riley respects him and chafes at the Boy Scout framing. Ethan knows this and accepts it.
Kiara Je-rach / StarfallHe asked her what she believed instead of fighting her. That choice defined her. He rarely talks about it.
CalypsoShe told him β€œyou are becoming what you were meant to prevent.” He did not respond. The message has not left him.
New teamThe team is Paragon-sponsored. He is not their day-to-day mentor, but his institutional weight is present in every room they walk into.

Open Questions

  • What exactly does he know about ending the Paragon cycle, and what was the source within the Virek Papers?
  • Why did he choose not to act β€” fear, doubt, or a considered position he could defend if pressed?
  • Has Calypso’s message changed his behavior, or has he rationalized past it?
  • How much does he know about Riley’s physical deterioration, and what would he do with confirmed knowledge?
  • What is his actual relationship with A.E.G.I.S. Regional Director Shaw β€” cooperative surface, something more complicated underneath?
